Everything you’re dying to know about eyebrow microblading

Published on 13 May 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

When we heard there was a treatment that could remedy the over-plucking we did to our brows in our teens, we had a small celebration. It’s like, the first step towards the time machine. Microblading is also a total life saviour if you’re finding your brows are thinning over time or you just want a fuller shape.

    • 1 What does it involve?

While HD brows work with what you've got, microblading can create brows out of nothing. Yep – like magic. A bit like pulling a rabbit out of a hat, if you will. As part of the permanent make-up family, it's technically a tattoo. Your therapist uses a special pen to draw precise lines that look like hairs, giving your eyebrows the appearance of being naturally full. It takes around two hours to complete, so download a couple of podcasts and settle in.

    • 2 Does it hurt?

Most people are more put off by the noise the pen makes than the way it feels. While it's no way near as bloodcurdling as dentist drills (we need a lollipop just thinking about that), it sounds a bit unnatural. As for the physical sensation, the therapist will either freeze the area or rub an anaesthetic cream in before beginning, so your skin's numb. So it's pretty much pain-free. (You can still have a lolly after, if you want.)

    • 3 How long does it last?

After your first appointment, the colour deepens, then fades. You'll need one top-up appointment six weeks later, and then it'll last anywhere from six to 18 months. How long exactly –  well, it depends on the colour and shape, and that's usually based on your natural brows. Ask your technician when you pop in for your consultation. And to maximise the effects, ideally it's best to stay out of the sun – count that as brownie points from your skin – and go easy on the exfoliation.

    FAQs

What is microblading and how does it work?

Microblading is a form of permanent make-up where a special pen draws precise lines resembling individual hairs, creating natural-looking, fuller eyebrows. It is technically a tattoo, making brows appear fuller even when natural hair is sparse or missing. The treatment takes around two hours to complete.

Does microblading hurt when you get it done?

Microblading is generally considered pretty much pain-free. Your therapist will numb your skin with a freezing spray or anaesthetic cream before starting. Most people find the sound of the pen more off-putting than any physical discomfort.

How long does microblading last after your appointment?

After your initial session and a required top-up six weeks later, results last from six to 18 months. Durability depends on your natural brow type, the chosen colour and shape. Avoiding sun exposure and limiting exfoliation help your brows stay looking fresh longer.

What steps can you take to make microblading last longer?

To maximise results, stay out of the sun and go easy on exfoliation around the brow area. Sun exposure and over-exfoliating can cause colour to fade faster. Taking these precautions keeps your brows looking vibrant for as long as possible.

Can microblading help if your brows are thinning or over-plucked?

Yes, microblading is ideal if your brows are thinning or have been over-plucked. This treatment can create the appearance of full, natural brows even if you have very little or no eyebrow hair. It is suitable for those wanting a fuller brow shape or a complete brow transformation.
