    Beach Brunettes

Published on 27 June 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Whoever said blondes have more fun, has clearly never been a beach brunette. Kissed with tones of bronze and flecks of golden blonde, this season sees dark hair take on a lighter, looser and more laid back vibe. Savvy colourists have long used balayage techniques (it’s not just for blondes you know!) to break up glossy heads of brunette hair with chunky streaks of bleach, but it’s not a look that suits all. Now, thanks to a fresh approach and the likes of Chrissy Teigen and Lily Aldridge to inspire us, brunette balayage is softer, prettier and beachier than ever before. “The secret is to finely blend subtle toned colours through the ends of the hair using a balayage method,” explains Marco from Marco Carola Hair and Beauty. “I’d recommend the Goldwell Silklift system as it is ammonia free and conditions the hair as it lightens. Olaplex is also a great option for restoring shine to previously colour treated hair.”

Want to bring even more beach to your hair? You’ll find your hair already has far more texture after a round of balayage but a little scrunching action and a shot of salt spray will work wonders on the most straight-laced of bobs, lobs and everything in between.

    FAQs

How does brunette balayage give you a beachy look?

Brunette balayage creates a softer, lighter vibe with bronzed tones and golden flecks. The technique finely blends subtle colours through the ends for a laid-back, beach-inspired finish.

What products help condition your hair during balayage?

The Goldwell Silklift system is recommended because it is ammonia free and conditions the hair while lightening. For added shine to colour-treated hair, Olaplex is also a great option.

Can you get balayage if you have dark hair?

Yes, balayage works beautifully on brunette hair, not just blondes. Colourists use this method to break up dark hair with streaks and blended highlights for a natural-looking, lighter effect.

How can you add texture to your hair after balayage?

After balayage, your hair gains more texture naturally. For even more beachy volume, scrunch your hair and use a shot of salt spray to enhance waves and movement.

What celebrities have inspired the beach brunette trend?

Chrissy Teigen and Lily Aldridge are celebrities known for their beach brunette styles. Their looks have helped inspire the current trend for softer, more natural balayage on dark hair.
