How to give good hat hair this fashion month

Published on 4 February 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Fashion month is officially on and editors everywhere will be striving to style out the cold, winter weather better than the next. In a situation like this, headwear is everything. Luckily, the trends have provided a plethora of hat styles to protect fashionable heads from the elements. Beanies, berets, basketball and military caps make for excellent windbreaks and have the added bonus of keeping your hair looking chic whatever the weather. Editors know that a skinny beanie  is best worn with a touch of volume at the ends of your hair, while a beret sits better on a sleek, straight bed of hair (Check out Chiara Ferragni.) Caps can look cute as heck with a low-slung bun and military styles work well with heavy bangs and shoulder-length layers. Worried about taking your hat off and being left with that tell-tale indent around the top of your head? No problem. ‘Avoid sticky hair products like wax or hairspray that set with warmth and change the shape of your hair.  Instead blow dry your hair with a volumizing mousse or texturizing dust,’ says Cristian Proietti- Head Stylist at Mie Mani.

    FAQs

Which hats are best for stylish winter protection?

You can choose from beanies, berets, basketball caps, and military caps for winter style and warmth. These styles protect your hair from wind and help you stay chic whatever the weather.

How do you style your hair under a skinny beanie?

A skinny beanie looks best when you leave a touch of volume at the ends of your hair. This creates balance and keeps your look fashion-forward, even in cold weather.

What is the best hairstyle to wear with a beret?

A beret sits best on a sleek, straight bed of hair. This style keeps the look smooth and avoids creating bumps under the hat.

How can you avoid hat hair after wearing headwear?

Avoid using sticky hair products like wax or hairspray that set with heat and change your hair’s shape. Instead, blow dry your hair with a volumizing mousse or texturizing dust to keep it looking fresh after taking off your hat.

Which hat styles pair well with different hairdos?

Caps are cute with a low-slung bun, and military styles work well with heavy bangs and shoulder-length layers. Tailoring your hairstyle to the hat type helps you look put-together throughout winter.
