4 weddings and an outfit: how to recycle your wedding look without anyone noticing

Published on 1 May 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Like Keira Knightley – who’s stepped out in her Chanel wedding dress numerous times since tying the knot – everyone wants an excuse to wear a beloved outfit more than once. Unlike Keira, our budgets don’t give us much choice in the matter – and with four weddings in one summer, if it’s a different friendship group, you can bet your bottom dollar we’ll be re-wearing. Here’s where your best pals – nails, hair and makeup – come in. Their ability to make you feel like new in, how shall we put it, a familiar outfit, is second to none.

    • 1 Strip it back (no makeup makeup)

Let those tears of joy flow free, and leave your lip liner at home because pairing your wedding outfit with barely-there makeup is a bona fide way to keep that outfit looking fresh. For this, it’s all about: BB cream for colour correction without the heavy-duty coverage; cream blush and bronzer because they put fresh-faced on the map; and lip balm to add a little something-something to your pout. Best part of bare-faced? It takes little effort to remove. So you can head from bar to bed, without the military cleansing.

    • 2 Hair is the hero

Sure, booking in a blunt chop before wedding #2 is a bold move, but hair can be seriously transformative. Think texture, colour and style (or haircut, you wild thing you), to be unrecognisable(ish) when that second ceremony rolls around. Change your part, switch up to down, or go heavy with the hairspray for a major volume lift. FYI, tousled curls just get better as your night gets wilder. And you know that hair accessories are back in a big way, right? Sling in a little vintage clip or, hell, try some gold-foiling (for reals).

    • 3 Let's bring back the drama

Nothing like a bit of drama to reinvigorate things. Eyeshadow brush at the ready, we’re going in with the smokey eye. Consider the colours in that much-loved look when choosing your shades for smoking; browns are a chic safe bet, while berry tones pair to perfection with warmer skin. Lips more your thing? That’ll work too. Just make sure you’ve done the proper prep to avoid a cracked lip situ.

    • 4 Hold onto your hat

By the time wedding number four rolls around, even you might be over your thrice-worn outfit. It might not be an obvious noughties choice, but headwear will add some interest to your look. Plus, where tradition may once have called for a wispy, feathered affair, fascinators have upped their game in recent years. We’re talking delicate flowers, polka tulle and new alternatives to the diamantes of old. ‘Have I seen that dress somewhere before?’ Maybe, but not this bad boy (*points to fascinator*).
