Will these beer beauty tips get you dunking your hair in hops this St. Patrick’s?

Published on 16 March 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

St Patrick’s Day is upon us, so in the name of research, we’re exploring the so-called benefits of beer in our beauty routine. From skin elasticity, to shinier hair, the rumours are rife, but we want the facts. Thirsty for answers? This round’s on us…

    • 1 Full-bodied, blonde and golden - hair, that is

With our taste in beer sounding a lot like last week’s salon request (honey blonde please), is it true that our hair can benefit from a good ol’ tipple? Packed with protein, malt and hops can strengthen cuticles for a well-nourished mane, but a beer rinse is major commitment. Aside from the inevitable eau-de-pub fragrance, stripping hair of natural oils could leave your locks dry, and a little lacklustre. Our verdict? Coconut oil is our go-to pick for a natural fix, or think keratin for a more lasting shine solution.

    • 2 Thirst-quenching or skin-hydrating?

Carbonated skincare – a Japanese beauty fave, is thought to help us on the route to radiance. High in bubbles and vitamin B, could a beer-infused facemask be the answer to a plump and perfect complexion? For deep-cleansing pores and removing dead skin cells, sparkling water is the real winner. Alas, we can’t include beer in our skincare routine just yet, but cleansing is thirsty work…

    • 3 Head for your local... nail technician

So. Silicon helps brittle nails grow stronger. Beer contains yeast which is high in silicon…right? Sure, one cup of beer blended with olive oil and cider vinegar may craft the perfect at-home soaking solution for nourishing nail beds, but do we really want to sacrifice our fave beauty treatment for a DIY fix? Stick to moisturising in between salon trips to keep fingertips fighting strong, and pour that ‘one cup’ of beer where it should be – into a pint glass.

    FAQs

Can you use beer to make your hair shinier?

A beer rinse might help strengthen hair because malt and hops are packed with protein, but it can also strip natural oils, leaving hair dry or lacklustre. For lasting shine without unwanted side effects, coconut oil or keratin treatments are recommended as gentler options.

Is beer good for your skin as a face mask?

Beer is high in bubbles and vitamin B, but it isn’t the best choice for skincare. Sparkling water is preferred for deep-cleansing pores and removing dead skin cells, so it’s best to skip beer-infused masks for now.

How does silicon in beer affect your nails?

Beer contains yeast that is high in silicon, which can support stronger nail growth. An at-home soak using one cup of beer mixed with olive oil and cider vinegar may nourish nail beds, but regular moisturising between salon visits is a more reliable way to keep nails healthy.

Should you swap professional treatments for DIY beauty fixes with beer?

DIY beauty hacks using beer may sound fun, but they don’t usually match the benefits of professional salon treatments. Sticking to salon services and maintaining a good home care routine ensures better results for your hair, skin, and nails.
