Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year is already inspiring our hair

Published on 7 January 2020 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Pantone have called it, yet again; the colour of the year is *drumroll please* Classic Blue. The colour – which apparently instils calm and confidence (I’m listening) – has felt the love from fashion and interiors for a while now. And now it’s beauty’s turn. Let’s start at the top, shall we?

Blue hair is bold, obviously, and it can be hard to nail the shade. Unless your hair is almost white, the yellow undertones can tone the hair to green or turquoise, especially as the colour begins to fade. If you’re going for a pastel or true blue shade, hair needs to be pre-lightened with bleach. Olaplex at the ready.

Committmentphobes, this one isn’t for you. Blue dye tends to stick around in hair for ages. Make sure to plan your next shade strategically (and get it done by a professional), the lingering blue tones can affect your new colour. If you’re not sold on all-over-blue, try some chunky highlights. It’s what the 90s would have wanted.

    FAQs

How do you achieve a true blue hair colour?

You need to pre-lighten your hair with bleach to get a true or pastel blue shade. Bleaching removes yellow undertones, which can otherwise turn the blue into green or turquoise as the colour fades. Using a product like Olaplex can help protect hair during the bleaching process.

Does blue hair dye fade easily or last a long time?

Blue hair dye tends to stick around in hair for ages. The colour can leave lingering blue tones even as it fades, which might affect your next hair colour choice. Planning future hair colours and consulting a professional is recommended.

What should you know before dyeing your hair blue?

Blue hair is bold and can be tough to maintain, especially if your hair isn’t pre-lightened. The dye lasts a long time and may impact your next colouring. If you’re not ready for full commitment, chunky blue highlights can give you the look without going all-in.

How can you avoid blue hair turning green or turquoise?

Pre-lightening your hair to almost white is key to preventing unwanted green or turquoise shades. Yellow undertones in darker hair can affect the final colour, especially as the blue fades. Ensuring your hair is properly prepared helps maintain a true blue result.
