Is pink hair the new blonde?

Published on 6 April 2016 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

You know a trend is turning into a classic when the likes of Cate Blanchett gives it a go. Stepping right out of her hair colour comfort zone and into the pretty new world of pink, she’s given this experimental shade a much needed dose of sophistication. ‘I’m seeing a real shift in the kind of woman who wants to go pink,’ explains colourist Sophie Woods, from Lockonego salon in Chelsea. ‘It started out as a very young trend but the pinks I’m able to create now are so flattering and pretty, it’s attracting a much glossier, grown up client.’

Recently, Sophie (Who happens to have the perfect shade of candy floss pink hair herself) has transformed 12 of her regular clients by swapping their signature hair colour for various shades of blush, rose, pastel pink.  ‘It’s all about creating a bespoke shade to suit someone’s complexion,’ explains Sophie. ‘If the mix of tones is right your skin will pop, your eyes will look brighter; it’s the same as having a fresh new set of highlights.’ If you want to try it out for yourself, Sophie’s advice is simple; ‘although it’s possible to go pink from any shade of hair colour, if you’re starting with a darker base you will need to have it stripped back with bleach.’ Maintenance is similar to highlights or balayage so you’ll need regular trips to the salon to sort out your roots and keep the colour fresh.  ‘I tell my clients to mix a little pink hair colour with their conditioner to top up between visits.’

    FAQs

Can you go pink if you have dark hair?

Yes, you can go pink with dark hair, but you will need to have your hair stripped back with bleach first. This step is important to achieve the right shade of pink, especially when starting from a darker base. Always consult with a professional before bleaching.

How should you maintain pink hair colour at home?

To maintain pink hair, mix a bit of pink hair colour with your conditioner to top up between salon visits. Regular trips to the salon are also recommended to keep your roots tidy and the colour fresh. This upkeep is similar to maintaining highlights or balayage.

What makes pink hair flattering for grown ups?

A bespoke shade of pink can be created to suit your complexion, making your skin appear brighter and your eyes pop. Pink is no longer just a youthful trend; glossier, more sophisticated tones are now popular with grown up clients who want a softer, more elegant look.

Which pink hair shades are currently popular?

Blush, rose and pastel pink are among the popular shades right now. These tones can be tailored to match your skin tone for a flattering, modern effect. Celebrities like Cate Blanchett and model Fernanda Hin Lin Ly have embraced these shades for added inspiration.

How often should you visit the salon to maintain pink hair?

You should make regular trips to the salon, similar to the upkeep needed for highlights or balayage. Frequent salon visits help manage your roots and keep the pink colour looking fresh and vibrant. Establishing a routine with your stylist will deliver the best results.
