Surprising ways to maintain your hair colour

Published on 23 November 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

A big part of post-colour upkeep is down to the products you use at home afterwards. But that’s not the only way to maintain the freshly dyed look. From tackling the subject of a ‘hmm, that’s not quite what I was after’ dye job to washing newly coloured hair, we’ve got the scoop.

    • 1 Buy new shampoo

Now’s the time to overhaul your haircare regime. Many shampoos strip colour from your hair (especially dandruff brands) so pick up a colour protective range to really nurture your colour and make it last.

    • 2 If you’re not happy – say

That sinking feeling when you leave unhappy with your colour…Don’t fret – salons want happy customers, so they prefer you give them the chance to put it right, so be brave, say what you think and arrange to go back in.

    • 3 Wash on cold

Turn down the heat of your shower when washing your hair. Hot hot water will affect how long your hair colour lasts for, especially if it’s a semi-permanent colour.

    FAQs

What kind of shampoo should you use after colouring your hair?

You should use a colour protective shampoo to help maintain your freshly dyed look. Many regular shampoos, especially dandruff brands, can strip colour from your hair and cause it to fade more quickly.

What should you do if you’re unhappy with your hair colour at the salon?

Speak up and let the salon know if you are not happy with your colour. Salons want satisfied customers and prefer to have the chance to correct your colour, so arrange to go back in for adjustments if needed.

How should you wash your hair after getting it coloured?

Always wash your coloured hair with cold water to help your colour last longer. Hot water can cause your hair colour to fade faster, especially if you have a semi-permanent colour.
