Here’s how to make the effects of your massage last

Published on 23 November 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

Think your massage is a fleeting indulgence for your body? Well, it’s not. The effects last long after you’ve left the parlour. To keep that super relaxed, oh-so floaty feeling, try the following. (We can’t guarantee that they’ll keep you zen when back in the real world, but they will keep your body feeling tip top.)

    By Liz Hambleton

    • 1 Stay hydrated

Drink water. Lots of it. It’s the only way to flush out all those toxins your therapist has just released from your body. If we’re getting really geeky about it, it’s best to drink room temperature water – it absorbs much more quickly and so hydrates you quicker too.

    • 2 Don’t touch that oil

If you’ve had an oil-based massage, leave the oils on your skin for as long as possible to work their magic. As well as leaving you looking like Adonis, they’re designed to soothe away aches and pains, and drain toxins even after you’ve departed the therapy room.

    • 3 An excuse not to go the gym

One bonus of a massage you didn’t think of – a real excuse not to go to the gym. Your muscles will still be reacting to the massage 12-24 hours afterwards, so give them a chance to recover. Of course it’s best to do it in front of Netflix in your PJs.

    FAQs

How much water should you drink after a massage?

You should drink lots of water after a massage to help flush out toxins. Room temperature water is ideal because it absorbs more quickly and hydrates you faster, supporting your body’s recovery.

Can you shower immediately after an oil-based massage?

It’s better to leave the massage oils on your skin for as long as possible. The oils are designed to soothe aches, pains, and help drain toxins even after you leave, giving you continued benefits if not washed off right away.

Should you exercise after a massage?

You should give your muscles 12-24 hours to recover before exercising after a massage. During this time, your muscles are still reacting to the treatment, so rest is recommended for optimal recovery.

What temperature water is best to drink after a massage?

Room temperature water is the best to drink for faster hydration after a massage. It is absorbed by your body more quickly versus cold water, which helps maintain your relaxed state.

Why is hydration important after a massage?

Hydration helps your body flush out toxins released during the massage. Drinking plenty of water assists your system in eliminating waste products and keeps you feeling your best after the treatment.
