Everything you need to know to avoid post-wax disaster

Published on 23 November 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

So you’ve gone through the pain to gain, the last thing you want is to go all bumpy or spotty post-wax. There are little, super simple, things you can do to reduce redness or irritation and maintain that super silky feeling well into the coming weeks. Warning – they’re not the most glamorous, but do we really care?!

    • 1 Invest in nappy cream

Here’s a beauty hack: baby nappy rash cream soothes redness or inflammation post-waxing or sugaring. If you’re all out of that, witch hazel gel works just as well. You might just be in the habit of letting your skin cool on its own, but there’s no harm in speeding the process along.

    • 2 Don’t go for gold

Planning on tanning? Leave it for 24 hours or your tan will form in the open hair follicles and leave you with a dotty finish. Not the look you were going for. That applies to spray tan and suntan. Right after a wax, it’s best to treat your skin gently so that it has time to recover.

    • 3 Exfoliate regularly

Prevent ingrown hairs by exfoliating regularly after your treatment. This stops dead skin getting trapped in the hair follicle and causing annoying bumps. Use a dry body brush on a daily basis before you get in the shower. It also helps with circulation to improve cellulite.

    FAQs

How can you soothe redness after waxing or sugaring?

You can soothe post-wax redness by applying baby nappy rash cream or witch hazel gel. Both options help calm inflammation and reduce irritation, leaving your skin feeling more comfortable.

When should you get a tan after waxing?

Wait 24 hours after waxing before tanning to avoid a dotty finish. Tanning too soon can cause the tan to settle into open hair follicles, leaving spots on your skin.

How do you prevent ingrown hairs after waxing?

Exfoliate your skin regularly after waxing to help prevent ingrown hairs. Using a dry body brush daily before showering removes dead skin and keeps hair follicles clear, which also helps improve circulation and may reduce cellulite.

What can you do to keep your skin smooth after waxing?

To maintain smooth skin after waxing, use a soothing cream for redness and exfoliate with a dry brush every day. These habits reduce irritation and help extend that silky feeling for weeks.
