This is how to keep your blow dry looking salon-fresh

Published on 6 December 2019 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

It’s a fact of life that good hair equals good mood – especially when you don’t have to lift a finger to create it. And that is why God created blow drys. If I was ever to win the lottery, I would get one every other day. Unfortunately, for now, I need to keep mine looking fresh for as long as humanly possible – here’s how.

    By Beth Ludolf

    • 1 Keep your hands to yourself

Do you ever find a bit of hair so soft it genuinely feels like silk woven by angels? Do you then incessantly stroke it literally all day? Well, don’t do this. The oils from your hands will transfer into your hair which basically means it’s a shortcut to limp, greasy hair.

    • 2 Sleep soundly

It may sound bougie – but hey, so is my blowdry-every-other-day dream – but buy a silk pillowcase. Sleeping on silk keeps more moisture in the hair (and the skin). Twist your hair up into a bun before bed to reduce friction (friction equals frizz), but stay away from hair ties. A clip or silk scrunchie won’t cause kinks.

    • 3 Be gentle

Softly does it when you’re brushing. Using a soft-bristle brush or wide tooth comb will help you avoid ‘brushing out’ the blowdry. Wearing a shower cap can also help protect the hair from frizzing.

    • 4 Use dry shampoo

Ahh, our saving grace, dry shampoo. When your roots start to look a little oily, a little dry shampoo will restore volume and shine. But don’t overdo it. Too much and you’ll be left with a white residue and heavy product buildup.

    • 5 Restyle at home

Squeeze an extra day (at least) out of your blowdry by adding a little more body when it starts to drop. Use a big round brush with your hairdryer to smooth out any kinks or use a curling wand to add in some curls.

    FAQs

How do you keep your blow dry fresh for longer?

Avoid touching your hair throughout the day to prevent it from going limp and greasy. Keep your hair up in a loose bun at night with a silk scrunchie and sleep on a silk pillowcase to maintain moisture and reduce frizz.

What should you do before bed to maintain your blow dry?

Twist your hair into a loose bun and secure it with a clip or silk scrunchie, not a regular hair tie. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase helps retain moisture and minimises friction, which reduces frizz and helps your style last longer.

When should you use dry shampoo on your blow dry?

Use dry shampoo when your roots start looking oily to restore volume and shine. Don’t use too much at once, as overuse can lead to a visible white residue and the hair feeling heavy from product buildup.

How can you restyle your hair at home if your blow dry drops?

Add extra body to your hair by using a big round brush and hairdryer to smooth out any kinks. You can also use a curling wand to add more curls, helping you enjoy your blow dry for at least one more day.

Which brush should you use to avoid ruining your blow dry?

Choose a soft-bristle brush or a wide tooth comb to gently detangle your hair. This helps you avoid brushing out your blow dry while still keeping your hair looking neat and fresh.
