Love them or hate them: scrunchies are back

Published on 15 September 2017 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

The revival of the scrunchie has been on our radar for quite some time now, but it wasn’t until we spotted them on the runway at NYFW recently that we really started to get excited. Worn low and loose in a relaxed ponytail (no pineapple heads here), if Mansur Gavriel’s show is anything to go by, they’re officially back. Sure, they may still invoke imagery of cheesy 80’s workout videos but today’s scrunchie (the scrunchie 2.0 as we like to call it) has had a serious makeover, not to mention a stamp of approval from the fash pack and Instagram’s It girls alike. FAQs

How are scrunchies being styled at the moment?

Scrunchies are being worn low and loose in a relaxed ponytail for a soft, modern look. This style avoids the high, “pineapple” ponytail and focuses on a more effortless finish.

Why have scrunchies become popular again?

Scrunchies are experiencing a revival thanks to their presence on major runways and approval from popular fashion figures. Contemporary designs have updated their image, making scrunchies a trend embraced by both style insiders and social media icons.

What is different about the new scrunchies compared to the old ones?

Today’s scrunchies, also called scrunchie 2.0, have received serious makeovers and fashion-forward updates. While they may still bring back memories of classic 80’s workout videos, their modern designs have gained approval from trendsetters.

Who is wearing scrunchies as a fashion accessory?

Scrunchies are favored by influential people, including the “fash pack” and well-known Instagram personalities. Even high-profile figures such as Bella have embraced this hair accessory trend.
