Why you should try pastel nails at your next mani appointment

Published on 22 June 2018 - Last updated on 19 December 2025 by Beth Ryan

I know it, you know it, you’re going to get your nails done soon. Would you be here otherwise? Nada. So, before your inevitable appointment, we’re serving up a dollop of manicure inspiration. Yep, summer is in full force, and although the temperature doesn’t actually determine our choice of nail polish, I do like to keep my fingertips fresh and bright come sunshine season. Enter: the pastel mani.

Sure to complement my (spray) tan and proven to make short nails appear longer (#science), pastel shades are the perfect pick for your next nails appointment. From buttercup yellows to carnation pinks, diluted rainbow shades are delicate and darn sweet.

Try rainbow hued nails – thats a different colour per nail – for a fresh twist on the traditional pastel mani, or ask for an iridescent top coat for an extra something-something. As for colour palette? Lighter skin tones are well suited to grey-toned pastels and pale taupe shades (these colours will neutralise pink undertones in the hands), where pale blues look mighty fine on darker skin tones. Of course, they’re your nails, so you do you… but try pastel, yeah?

    FAQs

Which pastel nail colours work best for different skin tones?

Lighter skin tones suit grey-toned pastels and pale taupe shades, as these help neutralise pink undertones in the hands. Pale blues look great on darker skin tones, offering a flattering contrast. Choosing the right pastel can enhance the natural appearance of your skin and nails.

How can you make short nails appear longer with polish?

Choosing pastel shades for your manicure can make short nails look longer. Lighter and delicate colours create an optical illusion that elongates the appearance of your nails. This effect is a subtle way to enhance your hands without extra length.

What is a rainbow pastel manicure and how do you try it?

A rainbow pastel manicure means painting each nail a different pastel colour for a fresh twist. Picking a unique soft shade for each fingertip creates a fun, delicate look that’s perfect for summer. This playful approach brightens your style and keeps things interesting.

Can you add something extra to a pastel manicure?

You can ask for an iridescent top coat to give your pastel manicure an extra touch. This adds a shimmery, light-reflective finish on top of your chosen pastel shades. The effect is subtle but elevates the overall look with a hint of shine.
